UK PATHWAY PROGRAMMES

A “pathway” is a special programme designed for international students to allow them to prepare for and enter mainstream education. There are 4 types of pathway programmes:

1. International Foundation Pathway (or Year 0): this is designed for students who have completed 11 (or sometimes 12) years of secondary education in their home country and want to enter university in the UK. Foundation courses are available in all subjects for all universities (except Oxford and Cambridge). The length varies from 8 - 12 months depending on level of English.

2. International Diploma / International Year 1 according to each provider. This is a special programme which combines Foundation elements such as Study Skills and English language with components from the first year of degree studies. The Diploma is mainly available only for Business, Finance, Computer Science / IT courses. This is 1 academic year course.

3. Pre-Masters Courses: designed for students wishing to study a Masters degree who need to improve their academic scores (if they scored below GPA 7 on their first degree) and / or their English and study skills. Courses are from 3 - 9 months in length, but only in Business and IT areas. Pre-MBAs are also available for people with no work experience, for example.

4. Pre-sessional English Courses: available at all universities and colleges for people who need to improve their English scores before starting a mainstream programme.

NB: There are strict regulations imposed by the UK Visa Office regarding English levels and exams accepted. Check these out in advance before making your study plan.

Pathway programmes are provided by on-campus university partners (such as INTO, Kaplan, Navitas etc), Colleges of Further and Higher Education and some independent colleges.

US PATHWAY PROGRAMMES

A “pathway” is a special programme designed for international students to allow them to prepare for and enter mainstream education. In the US this is still quite a new concept. There are 2 types of pathway programmes: on-campus pathways, offered within universities, and special degree transfer programmes offered by Community Colleges.

On-Campus Pathways: these are alternative Year One programmes designed for international students who need to improve their English, Study Skills and also sometimes their academics before joining the mainstream Year 2 at a US 4-year university.

Pathways are mostly provided by private companies working in cooperation with the universities, which allow them to teach on their campus. In some cases, the pathway is taught on one campus but gives access to a wide range of universities within that state university system or in that area.

Undergraduate pathways can be joined directly by students who have completed 12 years of schooling in their own country and do not require SAT scores or the Common Application system.

A few universities are now running their own international pathway courses in parallel with the regular programmes.

Some universities/pathway providers  also offer a Masters pathway, which may be a pre-Masters preparation programmes or an international pathway designed to replace part of the regular 2 year program. These are accessible to students who have completed at least a 3 year university or College programmes in Vietnam, although the specific entry criteria will depend on each university.

Pre-sessional English courses are available for all students who do not yet meet the English requirements of their pathway program.

The main private on-campus pathway providers in the US are INTO, Navitas, Kaplan and the Cambridge Education Group’s OnCampus system, but new providers are appearing all the time.

Degree Transfer Programmes:

It has always been possible and popular for both US and international students to attend 1 or 2 year Community College Diplomas / Associate degrees and then transfer to a 4 year university. The main difficulty, however, for international students has been in working out their best route through the College system in order to apply to their preferred university, and getting a guarantee of admission.

There are now a number of guided Degree Transfer programmes which do the hard work for them and guarantee admission to certain partner universities. The main advantages of these programmes are:

  1. Students can apply directly from Vietnam and do not need SATs.
  2. They have a dedicated tutor who will make sure they study the right number of credits and work towards a specific goal.
  3. They can enter even Top 100 universities from these programmes.
  4. Accommodation is provided in special residences on or close to the campus with free transportation.
  5. Students have a range of guaranteed options for progression, or they can apply to any university at all in the US.
  6. Fees are lower than at 4 year universities so they can save money on the first 1 or 2 years.

The main degree transfer providers for Vietnamese students are American Honors and University Bridge. Students must meet the academic and English requirements of these programmes before they can apply.

CANADIAN PATHWAY PROGRAMMES

A “pathway” is a special programme designed for international students to allow them to prepare for and enter mainstream education. In Canada this is still quite a new concept. There are 2 types of pathway programmes: on-campus pathways, offered within universities, and special degree transfer programmes offered by Colleges.

On-Campus Pathways

These are alternative Year One programmes designed for international students who need to improve their English, Study Skills and also sometimes their academics before joining the mainstream Year 2 at a Canadian 4-year university. They are taught on the campus of that university and students then merge with the regular student population in their second year.

Undergraduate pathways can be joined directly by students who have completed 12 years of schooling in their own country.

A few universities also run their own international pathway courses in parallel with the regular programmes, usually through their English Language Institutes.

Pre-sessional English courses are available for all students who do not yet meet the English requirements of their pathway programme.

The main private on-campus pathway provider in Canada is Navitas (at Simon Fraser University, BC and the University of Manitoba) and Study Group has a program at Royal Roads University, BC.

Degree Transfer Programmes:

All state and private Colleges in Canada offer degree transfer programmes. Students can study 1, 2 or 3 years at a College and then transfer to a 4 year university to complete their degree. Colleges tend to have partner universities in their province, but students can also transfer across provinces.

Some Colleges offer their own 4 year degrees, and for subjects such as Hospitality they can also arrange work placements for students.

Colleges offer excellent conditions for Vietnamese students to get the credits they need for even the top 4-year universities, and fees are much lower than university fees.

Quebec Province is an exception - the high school and college systems in Quebec are different to the rest of Canada and follow the French model. Students graduate from high school at the age of 17 and attend 2 years at a CEGEP College before entering a 4 year university degree. Although there may be exceptions, it is much more complicated to transfer into or from Quebec province and each case needs to be considered on its own merits. Quebec province also requires all students to have attained a basic level in French before entering its education system.

Masters Pathways

Some University Language Institutes, Colleges  and private pathway providers also offer a Pre-Masters preparation program (usually in Business / Management) consisting of English language and Business modules. Students usually need to have completed a first degree in their own country before applying.

IRISH PATHWAY PROGRAMMES

A “pathway” is a special programme designed for international students to allow them to prepare for and enter mainstream education. In Ireland, which is relatively new to welcoming students from outside the EU, this has not yet been extended to all institutions.

One year International Foundation courses are the only pathway programmes currently available and they are offered by 2 main private providers: Study Group (at University College Dublin) and Dublin International Foundation Course (DIFC) based at Griffith College Dublin and University College, Cork.

DIFC is a multi-pathway provider, offering progression in a wide range of subjects to a wide range of universities in Ireland, the UK and other European countries.

Foundation courses can be joined directly by students who have completed 12 years of schooling in their own country and require a year’s preparation in English and academic subjects before joining a UK or Irish 3 or 4 year degree or a 5 - 6 year medical degree.

Pre-sessional English courses are available for all students who do not yet meet the English requirements of their pathway programmes.

EUROPEAN PATHWAY PROGRAMMES

In addition to the Medical Pathway programme offered by DIFC in Dublin and which articulates to medical universities in the Czech Republic and Lithuania, there are 2 other significant European pathway routes available to Vietnamese students wishing to study in the Netherlands or Sweden.

Like the Netherlands, Sweden is a safe and economically stable country where English has high priority and many degrees are taught in English. The very high academic quality of courses (universities rank in the World Top 200), the possibilities of work on graduation and the excellent quality of life make both the Netherlands and Sweden very attractive study destinations for Vietnamese students.

The Netherlands

All Vietnamese students who have completed Year 12 in Vietnam and want to study a 3 year bachelor degree through English in the Netherlands must do a 1 year International Foundation programme. There are 2 centres offering programmes available which articulate to a total of 8 leading Dutch universities:

1. Holland International Study Centre, Amsterdam

  1. International Foundation Year in Business & Management.
  2. International Foundation Year in Science & Engineering.

2. CEG OnCampus Amsterdam (at the University of Amsterdam)

 a) Leading to the University of Amsterdam:

  1. Undergraduate Foundation in Economics & Management.
  2. Undergraduate Foundation in Actuarial Science.
  3. Undergraduate Foundation in Econometrics & Operations Research.

 b)  Leading to the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences

  1. Undergraduate Foundation for Politics, Psychology, Law & Economics (PPLE) degrees

An English Language Pre-Masters course is also available at the Holland International Study Centre with progression to the 2-year MSc and MBA at 3 Dutch Universities.

Sweden

Vietnamese students can enter Year 1 of a 4 year Bachelors  degree in Sweden provided they have the necessary English language and academic levels. There are 2 pathway programmes available for students who do not qualify for entry to 4 year undergraduate or 1-2 year Masters courses taught in English.
